At Least One Kidney

What Turtle Blood Tastes Like - Tue, 08/11/2015 - 5:46pm

a token
or two
scavenged from
the wild

gone feral
friday
night

two hours
pacing dark
tide creeping
beach bisected
by creeks
ribbons of
black ice

come
morning
a whole
frozen liver
at least one
kidney
on the
rug

saturday
sickday
deer fur
hide
signs
of what’s
to come

monday
i know
a leash could
prevent this
the hours
wondering
what will
be brought back
if he will
even come
back

lunacy
the wild one
nearly feral
for so long

he always
comes back
this time
with a four
point buck

its head
at least
frozen tongue
sticking out
of ice clenched jaw

the dog
i share the bed
with sometimes
gnawing
spinal column
pearls
ribbons
of nerve
and thawed
flesh

i put
the dog
inside
take up
the heavy
coal shovel
and with the
toe of my
boot, rock
the death
head into
the shovel’s flat blade
go to the garage
and dump
it in the bottom
of the trash
can

Klarissa’s Kool Klean Kanteen Kontainer

Clarissa Rizal: Alaska Native Artist Blog - Sat, 08/08/2015 - 4:12am

Necessary Kold or hot drinks Kontained in Klarissa’s Kool Klean Kanteen

When my friend Margie gifted me this thermos last Fall 2014, I thought it was sweet, nifty and thoughtful of her.  Little had I known I would use this precious gem at least once a day every day since!  It’s the perfect size, not too big, not too small.  I’ve traveled the ferry south from Juneau to Bellingham with it in my stateroom, traveled in my Chilkat Mobile along the West Coast down to Los Angelos over the Phoenix, up to Santa Fe and then Colorado.

This thermos keeps your hot drink hot for about 5 or 6 hours; keeps your cold drinks cold for about the same time.

I keep it handy at my side while I am at my desk, my drawing table, my sewing table, coffee table during music and of course my weaving loom.  It’s been my pal, my confidant (yes, sometimes I actually talk to it), and obviously my traveling buddy!  Yep, hot or kold drinks keep me hydrated serving me well…THE Klarissa’s Kool Klean Kanteen…!  Go out and get one for yourself!  Or better yet, maybe somebody will gift one to you…!

Thank you dear Margaret!

Receiving the NACF Fellowship

Clarissa Rizal: Alaska Native Artist Blog - Thu, 08/06/2015 - 10:30pm

Clarissa Rizal weaving the “Resilience” Chilkat robe she designed and wove, completed in June 2014 for the Portland Art Museum

Whew!  It was a lot of work applying for the Native Arts and Culture Foundation fellowship grant; well worth 5 years of applications!  This year I won one of the three artists under the “Traditional” category!  Click here to read more about the 13 artists selected for the NACF 2015 fellowship awards!

What am I going to do with the money?  I’m not going to pay off my visa cards (that’s how I generally pay my bills until I receive a commission); I’m not going to buy a car (though I really need one to get around a do the art markets); I’m not going to blow the bucks on a vacation (because I don’t know how to vacate and feel comfortable doing nothing); and, I’m not going to buy a new wardrobe (I already have one).

I’m working on several projects within this next year.  This money will be my “sugar daddy” so I can focus on creating weavings for an exhibit opening on September 21, 2016 at the Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver, B.C.  (more on this later).  I am also working with a close group of Tlingit artists to create a Tlingit Mentorship Program.  I am working on the various chapters for my book of Tlingit ceremonial robes (my first 60) to be published in August 2016.  These are just three major projects over the next 12 months.

Also,…I’m saving the money for a home.  I need a home to settle down.  Since 2007, I’ve been without a home.  I have a studio, but no home.  I am saving for a home.  That sounds and feels real good!

Thank you NACF for the support; it feels real good to be acknowledged.  I feel somewhat “settled” in my bones.  I like it; I like it.

School District Report on Investigation into Hazing

Juneau School District Announcements - Wed, 08/27/2014 - 4:35pm

The Juneau School District has concluded our investigation into allegations that on or about May 30-31 of this year a group of incoming senior boys hazed/initiated a group of incoming freshmen boys by paddling them multiple times.

These events were first brought to our attention in early June. At that time the district began an initial investigation, which, due to an active police investigation and summer vacation, was put on hold. When we were informed that the police had concluded their investigation we resumed our efforts.
