Nursing a Sting of the Time Machine

My bed seldom feels better
than those moments near dawn
when the clock starts to clatter
and my time is all gone.

Restful silence is broken—
O clock what have you done?
Your tumblers have awoken
with a sting of your tongue!

How my pillow is pulling
it can’t bear me depart.
While my heels are cooling
there deep in the dark.

My soft mattress embraces
warm blankets enfold me.
Like Lilliput laces
they’re snug and they hold me.

Let me linger still longer
as I bid bed adieu.
I’m sure to grow stronger
in a moment or two.
