The operation has already been performed on a mouse named Algernon with great success. Algernon’s intelligence has been increased fourfold. The operation is tried on Charlie, whose intelligence changes to that of a genius. He becomes far more intelligent than his teacher Alice Kinnian or the doctors who developed the procedure. As Charlie approaches the peak of his brilliance, Algernon shows signs of regression, which forces Charlie into a race against time in an attempt to hang on to his new intelligence and the new life he has built.
