First Thursday

■ The annual Kids Art Show at the Kenai Fine Arts Center’s Gallery Too will be on display in December. An artist’s reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. today, with appreciation awards at 6:30 p.m.

■ There will be an free opening reception for “Refined Light,” an exceptional retrospective group photography exhibit, from 6-8 p.m. today at the Kenai Fine Arts Center, 816 Cook Avenue in Old Town Kenai.

■ A first Thursday reception for “Circles & Cycles,” a show of fiber creations by Jan Wallace, will take place today from 5-6 p.m.

Events and Exhibits

■ Violinist Emily Grossman and cellist Kevin Charlestream will be performing classical duos at Kaladi Brothers on Kobuk on Saturday, at 5:30 p.m.

■ Marion Nelson’s exhibition of Encaustic works is on display at Kenai Peninsula College’s Gary Freeburg Gallery through Dec. 12.

■ The Kenai Fine Arts Center presents “Refined Light,” an exceptional retrospective group photography exhibit of images previously selected and exhibited in major statewide juried photography shows. About a dozen well-known Peninsula photographers are hanging their images. The exhibition will run through the end of December.

■ Alaska’s own pop music artist Karissa LaRen and iTunes chart topper Ernie Halter will perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14 at the Triumvirate Theatre in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna. Tickets are $15 and are available at River City Books in Soldotna.

■ The Redoubt Chamber Orchestra presents Evening of Christmas, their annual holiday concert, on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Kenai Christian Church. This concert features the Redoubt Chamber Orchestra, vocal groups, and instrumental solos and ensembles performing a variety of holiday songs. ■ “Circles  & Cycles” a show of fiber creations by Jan Wallace, is on display at the Kobuk Kaladi Brothers coffee shop during December.

■ The Cottonwood Gallery on the second floor of the Peninsula Community Health Services building in Soldotna will hosts an exhibit of work by members of the Kenai Peninsula Photographers’ Guild. Work will be on display through January.

■ The annual Kids Art Show at the Kenai Fine Arts Center’s Gallery Too will be on display in December.

■ Kenai River Brewing Company in Soldotna will showcase the artwork of Kathy Matta during November and December. The tasting room is open Monday-Saturday from 12-7.

■ Triumvirate Theatre presents a dramatic reading of “A Christmas Carol” featuring the acting talents of Ian McEwen, Joe Rizzo, Terri Burdick, Judy Shields and AJ Seims as Ebenezer Scrooge. One show only, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. at Triumvirate Theatre in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna. Tickets are $10 with a canned good donation for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.

■ Pull out your bell bottoms, dust off your disco moves and join the Kenai Performers for a 1970s-themed New Year’s Eve Extravaganza, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dec. 31 upstairs at the Kenai Recreation Center. With catering by Kenai Catering, beer and wine, toast at midnight, dancing, karaoke and other activities. Entertainment will be a live music review show by iconic ‘70s performers, plus appearances by favorite film and TV personalities. Attendees also will be awarded prizes for best ‘70s costume, disco dancing and karaoke performance. Must be 16 and up to attend. Ages 16 to 21 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tickets are $80 per person, and only 200 will be sold. Tickets are available at Curtain Call Consignment at the First Avenue Theater in Kenai, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; River City Books in Soldotna and online at www.kenaiperformers.org. Funds raised will help the Kenai Performers renovate its new theater space. Performers and volunteers still are needed. Holiday Fairs

■ The Central Peninsula Hospital 8th Annual Auxiliary Holiday Bazaar is today from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Denali Room at Central Peninsula Hospital. There will be lots of homemade baked goods, jewelry, wooden items, baby items, crocheted or knitted items, and much, much more. This is a fund raiser for the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund and other Auxiliary functions.

■ The Kenai Pottery Guild is hosting its annual Holiday Pottery Sale Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Pottery Studio at the Kenai Fine Arts Center, 816 Cook Avenue in Old Town Kenai. Call 283-7040 for more information.

■ North Peninsula Recreation is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center. Public admission is free. Vendor space is available. For more information please call 776-8800.

■ Celebrate the holidays with handmade Russian toys, hand-carved Nativity sets, Matroshka nesting dolls, Christmas cards, hand-carved ornaments, Kokhloma folkart, lacquer boxes, Christian books, Baltic amber jewelry, Russian trade bead jewelry, Orenburg woolen shawls, Lomonosov tea cups and china, aprons, icons, baked goods and Russian pirok meat pies at a bazaar sponsored by the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church and National HIstoric Landmark in Old Town Kenai. The bazaar will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Fort Kenay, located on Mission Avenue across from the Russian Orthodox Church.

Entertainment

■ An all acoustic jam takes place at the Kenai Senior Center from 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursdays.

■ Veronica’s in Old Town Kenai has open mic Friday at 6:30 p.m. and live music with Rob Justice Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

■ Odie’s Deli in Soldotna has live music Friday with Garret Hermansen from 6-8 p.m. and Pub Quiz night every Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

■ The Studio Espresso Shop at Spur Highway and Nikiski Avenue in Nikiski hosts an open mic night on Saturdays starting at 7 p.m. Call 776-7655.

■ St. Elias Brewing Company has live music Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

■ AMVETS Post 4 in the Red Diamond Center holds steel-tip darts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; steak dinner from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday; and karaoke at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

■ The Bow bar in Kenai has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays and live music Fridays and Saturdays at 10 p.m.

■ Hooligans Saloon in Soldotna has poker Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m. and live music Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

■ The Duck Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

■ Mykel’s in Soldotna has live music by Bob Ramponi from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

■ Caribou Family Restaurant in Soldotna has live music by Wally Hyde 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

■ Main Street Tap and Grill has Wednesday karaoke with Mark Gage, Thursday live music with Dave and Keeley Boyle and 7 Days to Noon, live music on Friday and Saturday night with 9-Spine, Sunday NFL Ticket, and Monday Night Football.
