Best Bets

■ A performance of Brahms’ “Requiem” will take place in Kenai Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium at Kenai Central High School. Performances on Saturday and Sunday will be at the Mariner Theater at Homer High School. The Saturday performance is at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday performance is at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at River City Books in Soldotna and the Homer Bookstore. General admission is $18. The performances will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

Events and Exhibits

■ Nikiski Middle High School presents “The Music Man,” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Student admission is $5.00; adults, $10.00. Tickets are available at the door.

■ An exhibition of student artwork is on display in the Gary Freeburg Gallery at Kenai Peninsula College, with a First Thursday closing reception at 5 p.m. today.

■ Opening night of the Paint and Pen the Kenai community mural project is today from 6-8 p.m. at the Kenai Visitor and Cultural Center. For more information call 283-1991.

■ A First Thursday art show will feature “Small Shots,” with work contributed by local artists, from 6-8 p.m. today at the Kenai Fine Arts Center in Old Town Kenai. A reception will include hors d’oeuvres and live music by J.D. Uponen.

■ A First Friday reception for Nikiski artist Jim Evenson will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at Aurora Fine Art on 5th Avenue in Anchorage. Evenson’s exhibition of Abstract Stone Lithographs will be on display through May 31.

■ Curtain Call Consignment Boutique, 1212 First Ave. in Kenai, presents a 4th Anniversary Fashion Show from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, with live music, refreshments and entertainment. Tickets are $10 and available at Curtain Call. For more information, call CNS Events, 252-7929 or 394-4559.

■ The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra presents an “Evening of Elegance,” a night of fine food and classical music in celebration of KPO’s 30th anniversary on May 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Alaska Christian College Conference Center. Music provided by The Areté Trio, featuring Emily Grossman, violin; Kate McVey, viola, and Kevin Charlestream, cello. The cost for this event is $75. Tickets can be purchased at River City Books and Dr. Thompson’s office in Soldotna and the Homer Book Store in Homer. Basket auctions and outcry auctions will take place throughout the evening. ■ F3T, The Fly Fishing Film Tour, a popular annual national film series, will make its Kenai Peninsula debut at 6 p.m. May 10 at the Kenai Convention and Visitor’s Center. This series features clips of the most exciting fishing footage filmed over the previous year. This is the first time this event has been presented in the Kenai/Soldotna area, and is a fundraiser for the newly formed Kenai Peninsula Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Along with these exciting films there will be door prizes and a silent auction. Tickets are $14 and are available at Sportsman’s Warehouse and online at www.akfishology.com. There will also be food and beverages, including beer and wine, to purchase at the event.

■ Several free flash mob workshops will be hosted by Peninsula Artists in Motion, held at Encore Dance Academy. It’s fun for everyone big and small! Space is limited. Flash mob workshops will be May 10, May 17, and May 24, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and June 8, TBA. Date, time, and location of actual flash mob to be announced at workshops. Entertainment

■ The Vagabond will have a Cinco De Mayo Party on Saturday starting at 9:30 with music by Blues Inc. featuring Robert, Mel, Brian and Matt.

■ An all acoustic jam takes place every Thursday. The jam is as Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna on the first Thursday of the month, and at the Kenai Senior Center during the rest if the month. Jam starts at 6:30 p.m.

■ Veronica’s in Old Town Kenai has open mic Friday at 6:30 p.m. and live music Saturday with The Crow Shoes at 6:30 p.m.

■ Odie’s Deli in Soldotna has live music Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Pub Quiz night every Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

■ The Studio Espresso Shop at Spur Highway and Nikiski Avenue in Nikiski hosts an open mic night on Saturdays starting at 7 p.m. Call 776-7655.

■ St. Elias Brewing Company has live music Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

■ AMVETS Post 4 in the Red Diamond Center holds steel-tip darts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; steak dinner from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday; and karaoke at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

■ The Bow bar in Kenai has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays and live music Fridays and Saturdays at 10 p.m.

■ Hooligans Saloon in Soldotna has poker Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m. and live music Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

■ The Duck Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

■ Mykel’s in Soldotna has live music Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. Robb Justice, and Fridays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. with Bob Ramponi and Dave Unruh.

■ Caribou Family Restaurant in Soldotna has live music by Wally Hyde 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

■ Main Street Tap and Grill has Wednesday karaoke with Mark Gage, Thursday acoustic music with Dave Boyle and Dustin Aaronson, and live music with 9Spine Friday and Saturday.

Markets

■ Kenai’s Saturday Market is now accepting applications for its summer market that runs May 25 to Sept. 14. The market is held at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, 11471 Kenai Spur Highway each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rates as low as $20 per day.
