Events and Exhibits

■ A book signing is planned at River City Books in Soldotna on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Homer author Marianne Schlegelmilch and illustrator Maggie Winston of Kenai will be signing copies of their new book “Slugs Are Forever” which was written as a fundraiser for the Independent Living Center.

■ The Ninilchik Traditional Council is sponsoring an author’s Q&A and book signing by Alaskan author and 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist Eowyn Ivey at the Ninilchik Community Library on Aug. 24 at 3:00 p.m. Ivey will discuss her bestselling and award winning novel “The Snow Child.” A limited number of copies will be available for purchase with proceeds donated to the Ninilchik Community Library.

■ The Kenai Peninsula Photographers Guild will have a photograph display during August through November at the Cotton wood Gallery, on the second floor of the Peninsula Community Health Services building at 230 East Marydale. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

■ The Paint and Pen the Kenai community mural project is on display at the Kenai Visitor and Cultural Center. For more information call 283-1991.

■ Erin Micciche’s and Marlene Pearson’s “Mother-Daughter II” fiber art exhibit will be displayed during August at the Kenai Fine Arts Center.

■ “Second Time Around,” an exhibition featuring the work of Marilyn Kay Johnson and Ralph Van Dusseldorp, is on display at the Kenai Fine Arts Center for the month of August.

■ The Soldotna Animal Hospital will host an Alaskan themed photo exhibit featuring Tricia Joy Sadler in the up-stairs gallery during August and September. A First Thursday reception will be held Sept. 5 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Entertainment

■ An all acoustic jam takes place every Thursday. The jam is as Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna on the first Thursday of the month, and at the Kenai Senior Center during the rest if the month. Jam starts at 6:30 p.m.

■ An open invitation is extended to a blue grass jam on Sunday 1-4 p.m. Musicians are urged to bring their instruments and join in. For more information call Jim Evenson at 776-8060. The monthly jam will be held at the Kenai United Methodist Church located next door to the Boys and Girls Club. The session is in the downstairs Fellowship Hall. Listeners are welcome. There is no charge.

■ Sackett’s Restaurant in Cooper Landing presents live music by Mike Morgan and Friends on August 20 and 21 from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m.

■ Veronica’s in Old Town Kenai has open mic Friday at 6:30 p.m. and live music with Katie Evans, Vickie Tinker, and Bonnie Nichols Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

■ Odie’s Deli in Soldotna has live music Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Pub Quiz night every Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

■ The Studio Espresso Shop at Spur Highway and Nikiski Avenue in Nikiski hosts an open mic night on Saturdays starting at 7 p.m. Call 776-7655.

■ AMVETS Post 4 in the Red Diamond Center holds steel-tip darts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; steak dinner from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday; and karaoke at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

■ The Bow bar in Kenai has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays and live music Fridays and Saturdays at 10 p.m.

■ Hooligans Saloon in Soldotna has poker Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m. and live music Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

■ The Duck Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

■ Mykel’s in Soldotna has live music Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. Robb Justice, and Fridays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. with Bob Ramponi and Dave Unruh.

■ Caribou Family Restaurant in Soldotna has live music by Wally Hyde 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

■ Main Street Tap and Grill has Wednesday karaoke with KJ Natalia, Thursday acoustic music with Dustin and Friends and Keeley & Nelson, and live music and dancing with 9Spine Friday and Saturday.

Markets, Fairs and Bazaars

■ Kenai’s Saturday Market runs Saturdays through Sept. 14. The market is held at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, 11471 Kenai Spur Highway from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 283-1991.

■ Farmers Fresh Market is open to the public on Tuesdays, 3-6 p.m. into September. Farmers Fresh Market specializes in local produce and benefits the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. The market is located on Community College Drive in the Food Bank parking lot. For information, call Bonnie at 262-3111.

■ The Central Kenai Peninsula Farmer’s Market features Grown in Alaska and Made in Alaska products, is open on Saturdays until September 28. Market hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Market is located at the corner of Corral Street and the Kenai Spur Highway at the bus “turn-around.” Call Carolyn at 262-7502 for more information.

■ A Flea Market will be held in the Sterling Senior Center parking lot 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Vendors may rent an outdoor space that comes with one table for $10. Spaces may be reserved by calling the center at 907-262-6808. The Flea Market will be held each Friday through the end of August. For further information call the center.
