Poem: Dip Netting in Alaska

Dip Netting In Alaska

By Dee Rusin

Salmon swiftly swimming

To spawn

THWAK!

Fast flowing river

From the sea

THWAK!

Thirty foot poles

Five foot net

THWAK!

Wading into water

Shoulder high

THWAK!

Salmon scurry upstream

Swim into nets

THWAK!

Fishermen frantic

Loosen fish from nets

THWAK!

Clubs crush heads

Bloody beach

THWAK!

Beach full of heads

To be scooped away at night

The process repeated

Three weeks each year

THWAK-THWAK-THWAK

Sad salmon

But the bar-b-que

Was fun

SMACK-SNACK!
