Poet’s Corner: This Could Be the Year

This Could Be the Year

By Bill Lowe, Sterling

This could be the year; what’s in store for you?

Do you have an agenda you would love to do,

or are there no ventures you desire to pursue?

Is there a relationship you need to re-renew?

This could be the year; do you perceive a plan;

a need you’ve expressed since your life began?

Could it be to travel, visit all the family clan,

or seek the wisdom of just one upstanding man?

This could be the year; what’s your one desire?

Will you continue singing in the same old choir;

maybe hold out for whatever might transpire,

or is it time you say farewell, finally retire?

This could be the year; what path will you go?

Possibly you’ve no plans, don’t really truly know.

Have you wondered what’s beyond your rainbow;

will it be full of joy, or emptiness and sorrow?

If this is your year, what direction will you take?

It’s your choice; could your eternity be at stake?

Jesus is the answer, with Him there’s no mistake;

His way leads to glory, the other to heartache.

Green, leprechauns and Nugget the Moose poured down the streets for the 34th annual parade hosted by the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce. Under cloudy skies — but fortunately no precipitation — a procession of viridescent celebrants representing businesses and organizations brought festivities to an array of attendees lining Redoubt Avenue.

William Raymond “W.R.” Benson (front row, far right) poses along with the rest of the Sigma Nu fraternity at Albion College in Michigan in about 1908. Despite a lifetime spent in the public eye, Benson was apparently seldom captured on film. This image is one of the few photos of him known to exist. As it turns out, I still use a whole lot of “obsolete” things
