Alaskans should be rewarded for fighting government waste

A recent Alaska Journal of Commerce editorial called for punishing the public interest groups who challenged the proposed railroad out to Port MacKenzie. As the chief advocate for one of those groups, I think citizens should be rewarded for trying to save Alaskan tax dollars while protecting our dwindling salmon populations in the Mat-Su Valley.

Hilcorp should find safer oil storage location

I've been watching oil and gas corporations in Cook Inlet for the past 16 years, and few things surprise me. But now Hilcorp Corporation wants to resume storing oil at the base of an active volcano on the west side of Cook Inlet.

Hilcorp is the third largest privately-held oil and gas company in the nation ("privately held" means you cannot see their books). Last year, Hilcorp bought from Chevron the major oil and gas production facilities in Cook Inlet, including facilities at Trading Bay and Drift River.

Environmental safeguards need to remain in place

The Escopeta Oil & Gas Company made headline news when it flouted federal law in its effort to bring a jack-up drilling rig to Cook Inlet. With recent news Escopeta's drill rig got "stuck" drilling for oil in Upper Cook Inlet, it's increasingly clear we're rolling the dice on worker safety and fisheries protection. Cook Inlet has witnessed responsible exploration in the past (for example, ConocoPhillips and Pioneer Natural Resources drilled responsibly on tracts off Anchor Point in the past decade).
