Break-up hit the Kenai River in Soldotna on Monday evening.

A two-ton block of ice placed on the frozen Kenai River below the Sterling Highway bridge moved far enough downstream to trip a timer at 5:29 p.m., according to a press release from the Soldotna Rotary Club.

The ice block had been lowered into place last month as a test run for a future Kenai River Ice Classic, modeled after the Nenana Ice Classic, a charitable gaming event in which participants try to guess the exact day and time that the ice goes out on the Tanana River.

ANCHORAGE (AP) — An on-duty Alaska State Trooper sustained minor injuries after the officer’s SUV was hit by a veering truck.

KTUU reports the collision involving Trooper John Probst occurred Saturday afternoon near mile 145 of the Sterling Highway.

Troopers 46-year-old Anthony Larocca of Kenai was heading north in a 1995 Dodge pickup when he tried to pass another vehicle and lost control of the truck.

For more than a decade, election workers have been baking cookies, muffins, pumpkin bread and other goodies for voters in the area.

“They’re the hit of voting,” said Patsy Clifford, co-chair of the precinct. “Everyone comes in to have a pumpkin roll and if they don’t see it on the counter they’ll ask for it.”
