ANCHORAGE — A rabid wolf killed near Chandalar Lakes and transported to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough has state health and wildlife officials warning Alaskans to be on the lookout for other animals that may be infected.

The rabid wolf was the first infected animal to be documented around Chandalar Lakes, an area south of the Brooks Range about 185 miles north of Fairbanks.

The trapper discarded the skinned, beheaded carcass of the sick wolf in a forested area near Palmer and state wildlife officials warned that contact by other animals could spread the disease.

ANCHORAGE — The National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report on the crash of an Alaska State Trooper helicopter gives few clues regarding the cause, but much more will be known following analysis of a cockpit imaging and flight data monitoring device, Alaska crash investigator Clint Johnson said Wednesday.

Pilot Mel Nading, 55, Trooper Tage Toll, 40, and an injured snowmobiler they had picked up, Carl Ober, 56, of Talkeetna, all died in the crash late April 30 about 5.6 miles from Talkeetna.

ANCHORAGE — An Alaska State Trooper helicopter carrying two troopers and a rescued snowmobiler crashed Saturday night in the south-central part of the state, and no survivors have been found, an agency spokeswoman said.

Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said the crash site was spotted Sunday, but she could not immediately confirm that the three on board were killed.

Wreckage of the helicopter burned, but Peters said it was not known how the fire started or how long it lasted.

ANCHORAGE — A young miniature horse in sneakers is helping a 4-year-old special needs child at an Anchorage public elementary school.

Zoe, a black mare, is a service animal for preschooler Zaiden Beattie at Russian Jack Elementary School. It’s the only service horse in an Alaska school — and after multiple online searches, the only service horse Principal Elizabeth Hornbuckle could find at any school in the nation.
