Sometime Sunday night, likely when he was watching “The Voice” at a loud volume in his home, a brown bear tore the right driver’s mirror from his Subaru, smashed its right tail light and rear window, ripped off the back windshield wiper, left muddy claw marks on the remaining widows, and shoved the entire vehicle about 8 inches in the gravel driveway.

“It would have been a lot more exciting if I had woke up and caught him in the act,” Sterling resident Norm Israelson said. He could have been sleeping when it happened, too, he said. He is not sure.

A debris burn spread Tuesday, igniting a .2 acre forest fire off of Kalifornsky Beach Road.

The fire was reported at 1:15 p.m. and controlled at 2:30 p.m., said Maggie Rogers, information officer for the Alaska Division of Forestry.

Two engines responded to the fire.

There were no injuries and minimal property damage, Rogers said.

The debris fire was left unattended and no burn permit had been issued, Rogers wrote in an email.

The fire started Monday, but was not called in until Tuesday, according to Rogers’ email.

The row of dirt sitting in the vacant lot along Lawton Drive in Kenai will, come late July, sprout wild flowers and grass once the city levels and sprays it with hydroseed, City Manager Rick Koch said.

“It was just a handy place to haul some material to,” Koch said, “and I knew there was a vacant spot where a couple of homes had an unobstructed view of the highway and Walmart.”

The project will cost about $15,000, he said, mostly for the hydroseed, a nutritionally rich mixture of fertilizer, mulch and seed commonly sprayed on new lawns or banks of fresh roads.

Cindy Littell worries that in time her grandchild will not remember his mother, only the one act that tore her from his life.

“It was the last thing I expected,” Littell said.

Tuesday rolls forward another year from the date, May 14, 2011, when her 37-year-old daughter pulled her partner’s handgun from under his truck’s seat and fatally shot herself through the chest.

Littell, of Soldotna, stood by a table in the Soldotna Sports Center after the rest of the room had left for Saturday’s Out of the Darkness Walk, a fundraiser for suicide prevention and awareness.
