With any luck, the world will not end today.

Still, for 5,000 years the Mayan calendar has predicted that Dec. 21, 2012 would herald the end times.

Whether by comet, warring governments, disease, computers, homicidal robots, or hordes of invading zombies, theories abound as to when and how humanity could finally be wiped out.

Clarion staff checked in with community members to find out how they would prepare for the end and get their advice for doomsday-minded community members.

The City of Kenai would receive enough money in Gov. Sean Parnell’s proposed Fiscal Year 2014 state budget to begin phase one of upgrades to its wastewater treatment plant, City Manager Rick Koch said.

“It’s an important project,” Koch said. “It’s one that we continued to submit on, and it’s something that’s needed to make a very fine wastewater treatment plant continue to be a fine wastewater treatment plant.”

The city wastewater treatment plant processes all municipal sewage, Koch said: residential, light commercial and processing plant waste.

Construction on the Kenaitze Indian Tribe’s new 52,000-square foot Dena’ina Wellness Center in Kenai is on schedule, and already the building is so large it is a major landmark from the air, said Jaylene Peterson-Nyren, the Kenaitze Indian Tribe’s executive director.

“Every time I give an update,” said Peterson-Nyren, “I go to Old Town (Kenai) and it’s two steps ahead.”

In her left palm Twyla Showalter cupped an egg. It was an ostrich egg, the size of an eggplant. In her right she griped a small drill.

She leaned forward in her chair, her elbows planted on a small square table in her wood-paneled workshop.

Everything was motionless, except for two wisps of blond hair that played across her face as she stared through her safety glasses, focused on the pencil lines on her egg.

And her pneumatic drill whined. The room sounded like cavities being drilled.
