The Alaska Board of Game will meet in Kenai for the first time in 20 years March 15-19.

Ted Spraker, chairman of the Board of Game, said the meeting will be an opportunity for Kenai Peninsula residents to voice their input on several proposals that will affect hunting in their areas.

The Board of Game will hear testimony from the public and consider the Kenai-Soldotna Alaska Department of Fish and Game Advisory Committee’s recommendations.

Kenai Central High School could host future state soccer, football and track tournaments starting next school year, thanks in part to a grant that will overhaul its facilities, KCHS Principal Alan Fields said.

“(It offers) more opportunities for kids in our community, and that’s what our school’s about,” Fields said.

The $200,000 U.S. Soccer Foundation will help fund a turf replacement of the current grass soccer and football field and the addition of a rubberized track to replace the existing asphalt track, Fields said.

A Cannery Road resident said she has put her home on the market, partially, because the mess left each year at the Kenai River personal-use dipnet fishery and the crowds that gather have become too much.

“It’s pretty much made our lives hell,” Kenai resident Carolyn Snowder said at the Kenai City Council work session Wednesday.

Thirty-three-year-old Jeff Hemann is an addict.

“If I was like some sort of crackhead living in New York City that’s where my money would go,” he said.

But instead, the Willow resident and his wife, Heather Hemann, 35, are mushers, and that’s where all their money goes, Jeff said.

“It’s like someone on drugs. They get their high, they get their fix. When I get extra money I put it into dog food,” he said. “I get the good stuff for my dogs because it makes me feel good.”
