Area swimmers compete at Valley Invitational

PALMER — There may be no “I” in “team,” but that didn’t stop the Palmer High School girls swim squad from putting an exclamation point after it.

That’s just what the Moose team of Naomi Graham, Sarah Hanson, Noelle Graham and Katie Stark did Saturday, shattering three school records in the finals of the 2012 Valley Invitational swimming meet at Palmer Pool. The team helped lead the Moose to finish third overall with 49 team points behind a powerhouse Kodiak group, which posted 114 points by winning 11 of 12 events, and Soldotna with 53.

SoHi netters top Wasilla

WASILLA — Soldotna made quick work of Wasilla in a 3-0 win over the Warriors on Friday, showcasing one of the Northern Lights Conference’s most experienced team against one of its youngest.

A senior-laden Stars team (10-2 overall, 8-1 conference) maintained its grip atop the NLC standings with its 25-8, 25-11, 25-11 win and a 3-1 Saturday victory over Colony High School. Against a young Warriors squad that returned just one varsity player — a sophomore — Soldotna was efficient and quick, never allowing Wasilla to gain any momentum.

Nikiski football tops Houston

HOUSTON — Not even Mother Nature could rain on Stephen Hartley’s parade. 

 

The Nikiski senior running back slogged through a near-constant downpour and muddy field conditions to pile up 288 yards and score six touchdowns Friday night in a 49-25 blowout over Houston. Hartley was part of a dominating rushing attack that piled up 424 yards on the ground while pushing Nikiski to 2-1 on the season.

Kenai boys win in OT

WASILLA — Coming off a rough patch that saw the Palmer boys limp into this weekend’s Northern Lights Conference Basketball Championships, the Moose pulled off one of the upsets of the tournament’s opening day Thursday.
Unfortunately, it came in only the first half of a deflating 56-51 overtime loss to No. 1-seeded Kenai Central.

SoHi girls, boys basketball teams fall at Wasilla

WASILLA — You’ll have to forgive Braydon Kuiper if he woke up with a backache Saturday; he spent much of Friday’s 64-55 win over Soldotna carrying his team.
The 6-foot-6 senior forward scored 21 of his game-high 31 points for Wasilla in a hard-fought win over a scrappy SoHi squad. He was part of a potent one-two punch with 6-10 senior post Connor Devine, who added 16, including two decisive layups late in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

'He's my hero'

WASILLA — Cassie Nix only briefly met Anthony Keller the morning of Oct. 2 — in fact, she doesn’t remember the meeting clearly — but that’s all it would take for Keller to become Nix’s hero.

That’s the day Keller, a 15-year-old high school sophomore from Wasilla, saved the life of her 5-year-old daughter, Taylia Hardy.
