Refuge Notebook: When does 'close' become 'too close'?

The first Saturday in May, Derby Day, my TV screen is happily filled for hours with groups of thoroughbreds flying around the Churchill Downs racetrack at speeds over 39 mph. A quote from a horse trainer regarding the next leg in the Triple Crown caught my attention. “…historically, Pimlico’s oval, with its tight turns, has favored inside speed for the mile and three-sixteenths Preakness, although no trainer wants his horse pinned against the rail in a front-end duel. That kind of close quarters can spook a horse.”

In preparation for a dinner party, a host carefully considers a litany of possibilities. Deciding the main course is customarily the toughest order of business, followed by choosing complementary side dishes. Perhaps an interesting theme should apply. Then there are the logistics … is the table large enough? Are there enough chairs? Might be nice to start with crudites to whet their appetite …

Bird migration, the periodic movement of birds from one geographic location to another, has stimulated the imagination of mankind for thousands of years. Within certain passages of the Bible there appear to be references to observations of seasonal movement: Jeremiah 8:7 “Even the stork in the sky knows her seasons; and the dove, and the swift and the thrush observe the time of their coming”; and Job 39:26: “Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?”
