The Soldotna boys get credit for never giving up, they just don't get credit for defeating Wasilla on Friday in the semifinals of the Northern Lights Conference soccer tournament at the Kenai Soccer Complex.

The Warriors held off a late Soldotna rally to win 3-2 and earn their sixth-straight state berth and a spot in Saturday's championship at 4 p.m. against Colony.

Soldotna now must beat Homer in Saturday's third-place game at noon to earn a state berth.

There was much to celebrate for the host Soldotna soccer teams Wednesday — senior day, sun and Northern Lights Conference Southern Division titles.

The Stars girls came in with the Southern Division No. 1 seed already in hand, and punctuated an undefeated run through the division with a 5-0 victory over Nikiski.

SoHi improved to 6-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the division, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-5 and 1-3.

The Soldotna boys scored in the first minute of the game to defeat Nikiski 2-0 and move to 3-1 and 3-3-1. Nikiski fell to 1-2 and 3-4.

The 2013 prep soccer season finally kicked off on the Kenai Peninsula on Monday, giving teams two weeks to fit in home games before taking a brief break before the Northern Lights Conference tournament on May 16.

And the ball didn’t get rolling by much.

In order for the host Kenai Central girls to beat Nikiski 2-0 and the Bulldogs to notch a 1-0 victory in the boys game, all of Kenai’s players put in two hours Saturday and Sunday trying to make the field playable.

History says one thing will happen when the Kenai River Brown Bears travel to Fairbanks to face the Ice Dogs tonight at 7 p.m. in a winner-take-all Game 5 of the North American Hockey League West Division playoffs.

Current events say the expected capacity crowd at the Big Dipper Ice Arena should expect something else entirely.

History says the Dogs will finally cast off the pesky Bears and advance to the second round for the sixth-straight season, and keep Kenai River from picking up its first playoff series victory in its sixth year of existence.
