The Skyview volleyball team made sure senior night didn't turn into Colony middle blockers night.

The Knights feature a pair of athletic middle blockers - Allison Leigh and Mary Klapperich - who were the tallest players on the floor Friday at Skyview.

Panthers coach Sheila Kupferschmid came up with a plan to contain the middle blockers, and Skyview executed it in a 27-25, 27-25 and 25-17 Northern Lights Conference victory.

Skyview moves to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the league, while Colony is 8-7 and 3-5.

It's not unusual for a freshman girl to burst onto the cross-country running scene in Alaska.

In 2006, Juneau's Leah Francis won the first of three Class 4A state titles as a freshman. Also in the last 10 years, Kenny Lake's Kailey Wilson won the Class 1-2-3A title as a freshman in 2008, and Seward's Rubye Foldager won the Class 1-2-3A crown as a freshman in 2004.

Two weeks before the 30th annual SoHi Pentathlon, Seward senior Eileen Audette didn't think she had a shot at winning. Less than a week prior to the Pentathlon, Kodiak senior Nando Macinko wasn't even at practice due to strep throat.

Both overcame those obstacles to claim Pentathlon crowns Friday at Soldotna.

The Pentathlon is the most unique meet in Alaska high school swimming. Each competitor swims a 100-yard individual medley, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. All the times are added up to determine the winner.

Racers and race fans flocked to Twin Cities Raceway on Friday for the annual night races.

The evening of racing at the dirt track featured six different classes and drew racers from most parts of the state that connect to Kenai via road. There were so many Sprint cars and A-Stock cars that they had to be split up into two groups for the heat races. In all, 53 cars were registered to race Friday.
