After not scoring in its previous three North Star Conference games, the Soldotna hockey team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Kenai Central on Friday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The Stars finished 4-2-4 in the North Star Conference, which will be good for the No. 2 seed when the conference tourney starts Thursday in the Matanuska-Susitna valleys.

After Homer’s 6-2 victory over Kenai on Saturday at the sports center, in which Tommy Bowe led the charge with a hat trick, the final NSC standings are set.

120 arrows. 104 bull’s eyes. Not bad for an 11-year-old, huh?

That was the performance Kasilof’s Abby DiPaolo, a student at Soldotna Montessori Charter School, put on at the Alaska State Indoor Archery Tournament on Jan. 12 and 13.

The tournament is organized by the Alaska State Archery Association. Archers compete at various locations throughout the state, then email the results in.

DiPaolo finished third out of eight contestants in the Cub Female Freestyle division. The Cub division is for archers 11 and under.

"This was a painful loss," said a fan as he was leaving the game between the Kenai River Brown Bears and Janesville (Wis.) Jets on Friday at the Soldotna Sports Center. "I want to hear them talk about the pain. I want to read about the pain!"
The fan should have stayed to watch Brown Bears coach Oliver David bring his team out after the 3-2 loss for some extra skating. There was pain aplenty.
The snake has no skin left to bite.
Visiting goalies are so hot it's a wonder there's any ice left in the sports center.
The Bears have lost their fifth straight game.

Kenai River Brown Bears coach Oliver David reads books by coaches to sharpen his trade. He’s currently reading a book by 49ers great Bill Walsh.

There’s no such thing as an official bible of coaching for the Kenai River coach to read, but David showed he’s well-versed in one of the commandments of coaching when he refused to blame injuries for the team’s recent woes.
