Brown Bears take on Wildcats

The Kenai River Brown Bears swept the Wichita Falls (Texas) Wildcats on Friday and Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center in North American Hockey League play.

The Bears won 9-3 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday.

The Wildcats were unable to slow down what is one of the most potent offenses in the NAHL. Kenai River is third in the league with 60 goals, and has scored five or more goals in six of 16 games.

Forward Matt Seidel is second in the league with 22 points, while Lucas Kohls is tied for seventh with 19 points.

Brown Bears cruise past Wildcats

On Friday night at the Sports Center, the Kenai River Brown Bears gave up multiple breakaways, let the Wichita Falls (Texas) Wildcats score on 40 percent of their power plays, and the Bears only outshot the Wildcats by one.

When a team has offensive firepower like Kenai River, though, on some nights none of those stats matter.

The Brown Bears got two points or more from six players, including two-goal efforts from Brad LeLievre, Lucas Kohls and Ansel Duesenberg, in wiping out the Wildcats 9-3 in North American Hockey League play.

Brown Bears rested, ready for Wildcats

After a weekend spent hosting an Octoberfest event for the fans, attending an Alaska Aces game and holding a team pumpkin-carving contest (won by Conor Deal, for those keeping track), the Kenai River Brown Bears are ready to get back to business.

“Rest is completely underrated across the board,” Brown Bears coach Oliver David said. “With working out, we took some days off from lifting, and once the guys got back in the gym, they couldn’t wait to lift.

“Same with having down time last weekend. They couldn’t wait to get back on the ice. They can’t wait to play this weekend.”

SoHi sweeps SkyHi spikers

All the energy and emotion that goes into senior night can cause problems for many teams.

Not the Soldotna volleyball team.

The Stars swept Skyview 25-20, 25-19 and 25-17 on Tuesday in nonconference action. SoHi moved its record to 11-2 overall, while the Panthers fall to 8-4.

While energy, emotion and just playing for the fun of it can be detrimental to some teams, the Stars are finding that the more energy, emotion and fun, the better.

Brown Bears take on Wild

On Thursday night, the Kenai River Brown Bears earned the respect of the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild.

On Friday and Saturday, the Bears felt the full force of that respect.

The Wild responded to a 7-5 loss to the Bears on Thursday by rebounding for a 6-2 victory over Kenai River on Friday and a 2-0 victory on Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center. There were 860 fans on Friday and 899 on Saturday.

“We didn’t show them enough respect,” said Wenatchee coach Bliss Littler of the Thursday loss.

Wild defeat Brown Bears

On Thursday night, the Kenai River Brown Bears earned the respect of the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild.

On Friday, the Bears felt the full force of that respect.

The Wild responded to a 7-5 loss to the Bears on Thursday by rebounding for a 6-2 victory over Kenai River on Friday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

Brown Bears exhibiting talent with historic signing

Just one month into the season, the Kenai River Brown Bears have already had one player commit to an NCAA Division I school, and two other players nab North American Hockey League West Division Star of the Week honors.

The team obviously has some talent. Just how much talent? Starting today, the Bears will begin to figure that out.

The Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild are in town for a three-game set. The puck drops at the Soldotna Sports Center at 7:05 p.m. tonight and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.

Nikiski volleyball sweeps Skyview

So much for home-floor advantage.

Before traveling to Skyview on Tuesday night, the Nikiski volleyball team had lost twice at home to the Panthers — once in the Shayna Pritchard Memorial Tournament and once in Southcentral Conference play.

The Bulldogs emphatically turned the tables on Tuesday, cruising past Skyview 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15. The sweep avenged a sweep by Skyview in Nikiski on Sept. 4.

The Bulldogs are now 4-1 in the league and 6-1 in nontournament play, while Skyview is 4-2 and 4-3.

Soldotna Volleyball defeats Kenai in 3 sets

The Soldotna volleyball team defeated Kenai Central 25-11, 25-11 and 25-15 on Tuesday in Northern Lights Conference action at Soldotna.

The Stars improve to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the league, while the Kards stay winless in league play.

Soldotna coach Bruce King said every conference match is vitally important as the Stars chase a high seed in the conference tournament.

“We came to play good volleyball and improve in the conference standings,” King said.

His players got the message.

Colony volleyball sweeps Kenai Central

The Colony volleyball team notched a 25-12, 25-23 and 25-13 victory over host Kenai Central on Friday in Northern Lights Conference play.

The Knights, who improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the league, controlled the first and third games, but had to dig deep to win the second game against Kenai (0-5, 0-7).

In the first game, Mariah Weydahl, who paced Colony with five digs, served out five points as the Knights jumped to a 12-4 lead.
