Moose Run Golf Course pro Bryan Anderson still reigns at what he calls “the easiest, hardest golf course in America.”

Anderson held off Tony Azzara, a 2004 Soldotna High School graduate, and John McBride to defend his Kenai Peninsula Open crown Sunday at Birch Ridge Golf Course.

Anderson finished with a two-day total of 3-over-par 173 to win the $1,250 first prize. Both Azzara and McBride tied at 174 to each take home $600.

Birch Ridge pro Nolan Rose was fourth with 147 and won $400. Amateur Beau Forrest matched Rose’s 147 to run away with the amateur division.

Arellano wins Donnie Morgan Kenai Golf Course club title

Gilbert Arellano fired a 13-over 157 to win the Donnie Morgan Kenai Golf Course Club Championship on Saturday and Sunday at Kenai Golf Course.

Arellano came into Sunday trailing Rich Edwards by three strokes and Todd Eskelin by one stroke after Edwards had a 76 and Eskelin carded a 78 on Saturday. Arellano was able to shoot a 78 on Sunday, while Eskelin had an 80 and Edwards an 82.

It was the first club championship for Arellano, who moved back to the area from northern California this year.

Nikiski football runs past Skyview

To stop Nikiski, teams can’t just stop Stephen Hartley.

The Bulldogs (1-1 overall) unleashed a three-headed running attack to defeat Skyview 34-7 on Friday in nonconference action at Nikiski.

In rolling up a 35:20 to 12:40 advantage in time of possession, Hartley did his share of damage. He ran 30 times for 169 yards and three touchdowns.

But much of his damage came after Nikiski proved it could also attack with Tristin Apted or Christian Riddall. Apted had 21 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns, while Riddall carried 15 times for 155 yards.

Area football teams seek win column

After failing to win a game in Week 1, Kenai Peninsula football squads will get on the board tonight at 6:30 p.m. when Skyview travels to face Nikiski.

Nikiski, of the small-schools division, was the lone Peninsula squad to score more than 10 points in Week 1, bowing to large-schools Lathrop 44-41.

While many Peninsula teams have big holes to fill from last year, Nikiski offensive coordinator Scott Anderson said Week 1 results were more about matchups.

East football team tops Kenai in opener

East scored on six straight possessions to defeat Kenai Central 42-7 on Friday night in season-opening nonconference action at Ed Hollier Field in Kenai.

The Kardinals are the defending medium-schools state champion, while East was eliminated in the big-schools quarterfinals last year.

Kenai Central coach John Marquez said the Kards had just three players Friday who also played in the state championship — Grayden Mendenhall, Duncan Brewer and Brad Smithwick.

Twins eliminated at Northwest Regionals

Control problems by the pitching staff led to a 14-8 loss for the Post 20 Twins against the Billings (Mont.) Royals on Friday at the American Legion AA Northwest Regional Tournament in Billings, Mont.

The Twins were eliminated from the tournament after two games, ending their season with a 36-11 record, and regular-season and tournament Legion state championships. The tournament championship was the first since 1995 and the third for the program.

Twins pitchers got away with some wildness in the run to the state championship, but that would not be the case in Montana.

Local wrestler wins nationals

Kenai Central senior Hope Steffensen says she was trademarked at the Junior Nationals freestyle competition as “that one girl from Alaska with the long blond hair.”

By the end of the tournament, held July 17 in Fargo, N.D., Steffensen might as well have been “that one girl from Alaska with the long blond hair who wins national titles, just like her brothers.”

Steffensen, of Team Alaska and the Kenai Kavemen Wrestling Club, won all six of her matches to take first in 117 pounds at the tournament, the premier event for Junior freestyle wrestlers in the country.

Twins lose to Hawaii in opening round

The Post 20 Twins opened the American Legion AA Northwest Regional Tournament in Billings, Mont., Thursday with a 12-2 loss to Waipahu (Hawaii).

Waipahu, the defending tournament champion with eight returning players on the roster, scored six runs in the first inning en route to invoking the mercy rule with one out in the eighth inning.

Twins coach Hector Rivera said the game ended with a ground ball to shortstop Jake Darrow that was perfect for a double play — a double play that would have gotten the Twins out of the inning.

Twins ready for Northwest Regional

The competition? It turns out the Post 20 Twins have seen a similar caliber this season.

The state-champion Twins open play in the American Legion AA Northwest Regional Tournament in Billings, Mont., today at 7:30 a.m. ADT against Waipahu, Hawaii. The game can be followed at www.mtsportscast.com.

Alaska State Cup comes to Kenai

The 2012 Alaska Youth Soccer State Cup will run from today through Monday at the Kenai City Fields.

Paul Ostrander, the vice president of the Kenai Peninsula Soccer Club, said 38 teams will play in the tournament, including seven from the KPSC.

With about 16 players on each roster, that means over 600 players will be storming the fields.

Those players and their parents also will be flooding restaurants and hotels, a welcome shot in the arm for a visitor industry which has been hampered this summer by a meager return of king salmon.
