Fairbanks gift shop closing after 35 years

FAIRBANKS (AP) — For the past 35 years, spending time behind the counter at Somethin’ Special has become a tradition for the Bertrand family.

The gift shop, which first opened at Shopper’s Forum in 1977, has become a reliable destination for local shoppers. Working there also became a rite of passage for owner Myrna Bertrand’s three daughters and their children.

“We’ve had three generations working in the store, on and off,” said one of those daughters, Stacia Koshak, sitting in a back room at the store. “As soon as they were old enough, they were here.”

Engineering students brave rural Alaska

FAIRBANKS (AP) — For a young engineer in Alaska, the Bush is often the place where brilliant ideas get trumped by reality.

Unexpected building conditions and scarce supplies in remote villages frequently force plans to be altered or scrapped altogether. Poor weather and local politics can add another layer to the mix.

With that in mind, three University of Alaska Fairbanks civil engineering students got an up-close view of village life last month, when they went on a rapid-fire trip to four communities near Bethel.

Fairbanks has finalist in camo contest

FAIRBANKS (AP) — When the U.S. Army announced the finalists to develop its new series of camouflage patterns last month, almost nobody saw the results coming.

Among the four companies and an Army research team in the running to develop the new patterns, there are three billion-dollar corporations and little Kryptek Inc., a Fairbanks-based company with a total of four employees. The Kryptek headquarters, if there even is one, is located in a back room of CEO Butch Whiting’s log home near Steele Creek Road.

FAIRBANKS (AP) — As he sits in front of a laptop in a quiet, windowless office at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, it’s easy to forget that Tom Grant has led a double life for much of the past two decades.

Grant, 39-year-old post-doctoral student at the UAF School of Natural Resources, spends his days immersed in the study of invasive plants and forest ecology. But his body, covered with scars and held together with metal pins, gives a hint of his other passion — professional snowboarding.
