At the highest point on the Russian River rests a rustic cabin near an Alaska Department of Fish and Game weir — a low dam built across the river used to count salmon. Two fisheries technicians spend the summer at this spot counting every fish passing through the weir’s trap.

The early run Russian River fish swim 77 miles up the Kenai River before fighting through the various spots of their natal stream, said Patti Berkhahn, Fish and Game habitat and fishery biologist. They finish the journey at Goat Creek, or Upper Russian River.

Business representatives from around the Kenai Peninsula gathered Tuesday in Soldotna to hear House District 29’s two Republican candidates answer questions about local and state issues. 

The candidates began with opening statements, outlining their desired goals if sent to Juneau. Challenger Gary Knopp, Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly president, addressed the apparent similarities between he and incumbent Kurt Olson.

She set a goal. Before her son reached age 5, Tee Serrano would own a home. With some help, she met her goal and has lived in her home for four months. 

“I have pictures up; the house is decorated,” said Serrano, a hairdresser at Evolve Salon. “It’s definitely comfy, for sure.”

After renting apartments for four years, Ramon Carreon wanted a permanent home for his family. In Oct. 1995, his wish was granted, and financial stability allowed him to grow, he said. 

Alaska State Troopers on Wednesday arrested multiple suspects after two men were allegedly robbed at gunpoint and shot at by one of the suspects. 

Paul M. Larson, 36, of Wasilla, Jill C. Abear, 30, of Anchor Point, and Dessie L. Ozhuwan, 21, of Kenai, were arrested for first-degree robbery, second-degree theft and attempted murder. Court records show Larson and Abear facing the attempted murder charge while there are no open cases against Ozhuwan.
