Target practice Sunday night ignited a fire in the Soldotna area.

At 8 p.m., Central Emergency Services and the Alaska Division of Forestry responded to Rainbow Drive off of Mackey Lake Road in Soldotna for a report of a wildland fire.

Crews from both agencies surrounded the fire on its sides, fighting the flames inward. They arrived on scene within 10 minutes of receiving the report, which was called in by the people shooting targets. The fire had spread about an acre, said Brad Nelson, CES health and safety officer.

Artists are insecure, said Richard Eissler.

Sitting at a dining room table at the edge his kitchen -- part of a larger living room decorated with animal furs and illuminated by large windowpanes looking out onto the unscathed wilderness surrounding his home -- Eissler expounded on the decision to resubmit his black and white photos in hopes of winning a Rasmuson project award.

It takes determination -- encouragement from friends also helps -- to reattempt that artistic plunge, he said.

The Independent Baptist Church on Oil Well Road in Ninilchik sat with a for-sale sign posted on its exterior for about two years.

Ned and Christina West eventually purchased the church. Now, they plan to split the purchased church in half, lift the halves onto a flatbed truck and haul their new home about 60 miles to Nikiski.

He knew about the high possibility of a genetic disorder being passed down to him since his early 20s. Jason Johnston, 33, recalled visiting his grandmother, Clarice Phillips, in a nursing home during that time.

"I don't remember much except she couldn't control her body movements and didn't recognize my mom," said Jason, who was diagnosed with Huntington's disease last year. "Didn't even recognize her own child ... It was pretty hard on my mom."
