There is a strong history of heart disease on both sides of Sharen Sleater’s family. 

Her health problems began in her early 20s with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglycerides; afflictions associated with heart disease. 

It took her father’s death, who died at 67, to receive a fair diagnosis. She returned to Alaska with his autopsy in hand and warnings from an out-of-state coroner that she probably had a similar condition, she said. 

A Kenai man has been charged with multiple counts of assault on a police officer. 

Brian Hoge, 48, allegedly grabbed an officer by the neck after he was pulled over for a DUI in October of last year. 

Police report Hoge was agitated when pulled over at 12:41 a.m., Oct. 29, 2011 off of Tinker Lane and Kaknu Way. He allegedly had an odor of alcohol coming from his breath, thick speech and bloodshot watery eyes. 

An Internet scam in which homeowners' identities are used to trick would-be renters into transferring money via Western Union has made its way to the Kenai Peninsula.

"It's really bad," said Glenda Feeken, an area realtor with Re/Max. "People living here have sent money off, expecting to move into these houses."

The scammer claims he or she is a missionary residing in West Africa and plans to remain abroad for a few years. Offering rent for a cheap price, many people fall victim to the crooked deals.

The request was routine for Professor Alan Hirsch. The attorney traveled to the small hamlet of Kenai to offer expert testimony for a suppression hearing.

Hirsch said he exited his plane after a long flight, jetlagged and exhausted. Local defense attorney Ben Adams greeted him. Adams informed the expert consultant his services were no longer needed. The case was settled a day prior.

The trip wasn't wasted. An impromptu presentation was arranged at the Kenai Courthouse.
