Two residents were injured in an explosion inside a Soldotna home Thursday afternoon at 336 West Riverview Ave.

Central Emergency Services investigators haven’t pinned down the cause of the fire.

The small single-story home sat slumped, windows shattered in the total loss incident. A black SUV sat close to house badly damaged as well.

The Clucas family dispersed themselves throughout room 207 at Hooligan's Sports Fishing Lodge in Soldotna. It was early Monday morning, and Christopher, 14, and Kaytlen, 13, stared into large, boxy laptops busying themselves with home-school assignments.

Hooligan's was the third temporary living space the Clucas family has occupied since their Clam Gulch home was destroyed by a fire on the evening of Jan. 9.

Kenai Peninsula residents were quick to help the family in need, but the parents of four lost everything in the fire and are unsure what the future holds.

After six days of testimony and the examination of copious amounts of evidence, a jury heard closing arguments from both parties regarding Richard Miller, a 67-year-old Kenai man charged with more than 100 counts of felony possession of child pornography.

On Tuesday at the Kenai Courthouse, Assistant District Attorney Kelly Lawson argued evidence used during the trial irrefutably proved ownership by Miller. Defense attorney Randall Cavanaugh argued his client didn't exclusively control the content of the evidence, and the prosecution left out evidence relating to the case.

A year ago, Clarence Helgevold Jr. was drunk when he got behind the wheel. His actions led to the death of George Larion.

On Wednesday, Helgevold, 60, was sentenced to eight years with three and a half suspended for criminally negligent homicide, and one year with six months suspended for misdemeanor driving under the influence. He will serve five years in prison.

Helgevold changed his plea to guilty last May, reducing the original charge of manslaughter, which would’ve imposed a longer jail sentence.
