Frank Roach admits he did a lot of things wrong. His financial disclosures were illegible and he failed to register the telemarketers working for his nonprofit company, among other hiccups.

But, Roach — the man who authorities allege intentionally kept donations, monetary and otherwise, to pay for his lifestyle and not “Boxes for Heroes” as he claimed — says his heart was in the right place.

His organization did what they said they’d do — send boxes to troops overseas. He and others sent hundreds of boxes during the past six years, he said in an interview with the Clarion.

The construction of a playground in Nikiski marks a major step forward for local nonprofit Youth Restoration Corps. The organization obtained earlier this year a contractor’s license, as the state required, and expanded its vocational program.

“We’ve always focused on working with the youth through teaching job skills, and the vocational program furthers that mission,” said Kelly Wolf, the Corps co-founder and project manager. “And this was the perfect project.

A Las Vegas man who operated a drug trafficking organization that transported prescription drugs from Nevada to Anchorage, Homer, Kenai, Soldotna and Wasilla pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy, as well as drug and money laundering charges, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Nevada.

Nicholas Ghafouria, 28, agreed to serve 15 years in federal prison. He laundered more than $1 million through bank accounts in Las Vegas, according to the press release.

As Kenai Peninsula residents batten down the hatches in preparation for winter, many may be thinking about the upcoming flu season, but so far there are no confirmed cases of seasonal influenza in the Gulf Coast region of the state.

However, that doesn’t mean residents should expect anything less than usual, or forgo annual vaccines, officials said.

The local Department of Health and Social Services office tested about 60 specimens, but none returned positive as the various flu viruses, said Yvette Barrows, nurse manger at Kenai Public Health Center.
