The Soldotna Stars finished off the Northern Lights Conference regular season with a sweep over the Kenai Central Kardinals on Saturday afternoon in Kenai, with game wins of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-14.

The Stars end the regular season with a 9-1 conference record, and 14-2 overall. The Kards finish 0-10 in the NLC. Palmer also is 9-1 in the league.

The Moose and Stars split in head-to-head play this year. SoHi coach Bruce King said his best guess is the top seed for the NLC tourney will be decided by a coin flip.

Kenai resident Judith Abrahams recently finished as the top physically challenged athlete at the XTerra USA Championships off-road triathlon on Oct. 13. It is the first national title she has won.

The event, which took place at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah, attracted more than 300 qualified triathletes from 45 states, and was the last of a 70-race season that began in March. The XTerra America Tour requires athletes to qualify for the race by finishing among the top in their division.

A season’s worth of hard work and training will be tested this weekend at the Region III swimming and diving championships in Homer.

Preliminary events for diving began Thursday, and continue with semifinals today, starting with the girls diving semis at 9:30 p.m. and boys diving semis at 11 a.m. Swimming prelims begin at 3 p.m.

Swimming and diving finals start at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Alaska high school small-schools wrestling season has quietly crept upon us, and the small-schools division is rolling with both returning talent and fresh faces in the Class 1-2-3A Denali-Kachemak Conference.

The King of the Mountain tournament in Seward on Friday and Saturday allowed most of the teams a chance to really see who will be competitive this year.
