Persistent rain showers have moved the Region III cross-country meet to Tsalteshi Trails behind Skyview High School on Saturday.
The meet was originally supposed to be held in Seward, but continuing deteriorating conditions there forced the meet to be moved to Tsalteshi Trails.
The race schedule is as follows: girls open at 1 p.m., boys open at 1:45 p.m., Class 1-2-3A girls at 2:30 p.m., Class 4A girls at 3:15 p.m., Class 1-2-3A boys at 4 p.m., and Class 4A boys at 4:45 p.m.
The cross-country season, as short as it may seem, concludes for many runners this weekend.

One week removed from a close loss to Eielson, Nikiski pummeled the Valdez Buccaneers in a 48-6 Greatland Conference win Friday evening at Nikiski.

Senior running back Stephen Hartley rushed for 247 yards and four touchdowns, and sophomore teammate Christian Riddall put up 136 rushing yards, including an 81-yard kick return late in the third quarter, and had one touchdown catch.

“We were determined to stop the run in the middle, the gaps were filled, and we were disciplined,” Riddall said. “A lot of young guys were rotated in, so that was good to see.”

Soldotna swept Wasilla three games to none Thursday night in Northern Lights conference play at Soldotna. Soldotna won the first game 25-17, the second 25-15 and the third 25-15.
With an unofficial clocking of one hour, 10 minutes, the Stars played efficiently with the stats spread evenly through the team.
“I think we’re a pretty strong team, both offensively and defensively,” Soldotna coach Bruce King said. “Tonight we just gave it a high level of consistency, and we played smart.

For almost three hours Saturday afternoon, Greatland Conference teams Nikiski and Eielson traded punches in a barnburner of a game at Nikiski, but it was the Eielson Ravens that escaped with the 57-48 victory.
The game featured 15 touchdowns, seven from Nikiski and eight from Eielson, and most of the game was played with the two teams separated by a single touchdown or less. In fact, the final score was the largest lead of the day for either team. There were 12 lead changes and ties throughout the game.
