The Kenai Central boys ended their season in the Class 4A state tournament with a 51-38 loss to Juneau-Douglas in the fourth-place game Saturday at the UAA Wells Fargo Sports Arena in Anchorage.

“We watched them play for the first time the other day, decided they like to do step-up dribble drives, and so we talked about trying to contain their dribble penetration,” Juneau head coach Robert Casperson said. “They have some very strong, aggressive players who are able to attack the basket, so credit goes to them.”

Juneau was led by Tony Yadao, who had 16 points.

After two losses in the first two days of the Class 3A state tournament, the Seward girls have been eliminated from the consolation bracket.

The Seahawks lost to Craig 45-43 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage on Friday.

“They simply had two more when the buzzer went off, and that’s basketball,” Seward head coach Curtis Berry said. “We had our opportunities and they had theirs, and it came down to the wire, and they won.”

Seward led 12-8 after the first quarter, and from there the game never was far out of hand, as the biggest lead was six points.

While the Kenai Central boys were eliminated from Class 4A state championship contention with their loss to Dimond on Thursday, they made the best of their situation by winning Friday against Colony, topping the Knights 58-48 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

“Obviously, there was nothing good about yesterday, and there was nothing we could say that would change the outcome,” head coach Ken Felchle said. “So I told the guys in the locker room that we have an opportunity to keep going, and our season is not coming to an end yet.”

With a tough opponent in the Dimond Lynx, the Kenai boys attempted an upset in the first round of the Class 4A boys state tournament, but were instead overwhelmed 61-22 on Thursday at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

“You’re not going to win a lot of basketball games when you shoot 23 percent from the field, 33 percent from the free-throw line, and 22 percent from the 3-point line,” Kenai head coach Ken Felchle said.
