The Dimond girls basketball team finished off its weekend with a dominant 70-34 win over the Kenai Central Kardinals on Saturday afternoon at Kenai.

The Lynx defeated Soldotna on Friday in a similar 70-33 game.

“I know on paper this is a dynamite team, but when we beat teams, we want to do it respectively,” said Dimond coach Jim Young. “It’s hard, though, because we’re such a transition basketball team and we like to play up-tempo and in-your-face defense, and sometimes when we let up, we become unfocused.”

Kenai Central High School was the scene of the Kardinals wrestling team’s senior night on Thursday, and so it was appropriate that Kenai took a victory in a dual meet with the Soldotna Stars in a 63-9 score.

Thursday also marked Kenai coach Stan Steffensen’s birthday, and the entire team surrounded him after the competition with a cake and a boisterous rendition of the birthday song.

One month exactly after tying Homer 2-2, the Soldotna Stars hockey team found themselves in the same position — leaving the ice after a scoreless game with Palmer on Friday afternoon at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The Stars had many chances — 40 total — but could not once slip the puck past Palmer goalie Ashton Good.

“He played out of his mind,” Palmer coach Brad Hansen said. “To take 40 shots on goal and not let one in, that’s crazy. That’s our best guy.

“It’s a great tie for us. I just told them to keep playing and they held them off.”

The Soldotna Stars’ undefeated season came to an end Thursday night at Soldotna, as Northern Lights conference rival Colony snapped SoHi’s streak in a 36-33 win. Soldotna now stands with a 7-1 overall record, while Colony is 6-3.

Colony was able to seal the deal with a strong fourth-quarter effort from junior Izzy Tweed, who had nine of Colony’s 11 fourth-quarter points. Tweed notched 12 points overall, while teammate Jennifer Solano had eight points.
