I was aboard the charter boat Optimist, 20 miles west of Homer. Skipper Daniel Donich had just finished putting the trolling lines in the water when one of the rods popped up, a sign that a fish had pulled the line off the downrigger clip.
It also was a sign that chartering a fishing trip late in the year was turning out to be a good idea. Due to untrustworthy weather, fishing marine waters in the fall can be iffy, and I’d known this when I booked a combo trip for Sept. 2. However, I figured it might be the last chance to fish the salt this year, so I was going, come whatever.
