While she was on a beach in Hawaii, Jenna Hansen saw that sea glass was being used for landscaping she thought was beautiful. She took the idea back home to Nikiski with her, and thought there could be a way she could use the same materials.

“I was thinking about landscaping, you go on the Internet and research sea glass, you see mainly jewelry, and that gave me the idea for jewelry,” Hansen, 14, said.

That’s when the process started for Hansen, a freshmen at Nikiski Middle-High School. She decided to form her own business — Kenai Peninsula Seaglass.

Judy Fandrei, having been a veterinarian technician for the last 10-plus years, started volunteering at the Kenai Animal Shelter a couple years ago because she wanted to do something with animals that didn't have a home.

It was at the shelter she saw a problem.

"I realized what a big, big problem we have with not enough homes for cats and dogs on the Peninsula," she said. "Just being there one day, I was amazed with how many animals came in."

She knew she needed to do something, but it didn't just happen overnight.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will offer three additional pre-kindergarten programs for the 2012-2013 school year.

The programs, funded with federal Title 1 grant money, will be available at Paul Banks Elementary in Homer, Seward Elementary and Sterling Elementary. With the newly offered programs, the district will offer Pre-K classes at a total of nine schools throughout the district. There are 98 students currently enrolled in six existing programs, and that number is expected to increase next year.

Most of us would cringe at the words “moving day.” But imagine trying to move a library of countless books organized by the Dewey Decimal System to a smaller, yet-to-be-determined, temporary facility.

Luckily, Terri Burdick and her staff at the Joyce K. Carver Soldotna Public Library are up for the task.

They’re going to need to decide which books go and which books stay while the library undergoes a makeover this summer.
