Logan Tuttle is a reporter at the Peninsula Clarion where he covers fish, education and general assignments. He was born and raised in Wasilla and attended the University of Alaska Anchorage where he received his B.A. in Journalism & Public Communications in 2010. Prior to working at the Clarion, Logan was the Photo Editor at The Northern Light (UAA's student paper), and interned and freelanced at Alaska Newspapers, Inc. located in Anchorage.

School dollars: District issues preliminary budget

The preliminary Kenai Peninsula Borough School District budget for Fiscal Year 2013 shows the district operating under a more than $2 million deficit for the year.

The budget was presented by KPBSD assistant superintendent Dave Jones during Monday’s Board of Education meeting. The district’s preliminary general fund budget totals $143,007,644 while budgeted revenue from all sources comes out to $140,526,201, according to the budget. 

“That’s a deficit of $2,481,143 (million) when we start (next year),” Jones announced to the board and a standing-room only crowd.

KPBSD leading the state with school meals

When it comes to nutritious school meals, the Kenai Peninsula Borough is leading the pack.

Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Student Nutrition Director Dean Hamburg was named Director of the Year by the Alaska School Nutrition Association last week. 

The award was presented by AKSNA President Bob Eason, who is the nutrition director for the North Slope Borough School District in Barrow.

“Dean is one of the most compassionate directors in the state for feeding children,” Eason said. “His program is leading the USDA meal programs in Alaska.”

Relay For Life makes changes, declares goals

At every Relay for Life, cancer survivors don purple shirts to represent the battle forged between the patient and the uphill battle before them. Each warrior brings with them someone that has been with them every step of the way, someone that walks inch by inch beside them on their way to battle. The caregivers. 

The Kenai Peninsula Relay For Life Kick-off event was Friday night at the Kenai Christian Center. About 30 participants learned of changes to this year’s Relay, and heard from guest speakers who emphasized the importance of the event.

Atwater staying put with KPBSD

Dr. Steve Atwater will remain the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District superintendent. Atwater was a finalist for the same position with the Anchorage School District. 

The announcement by ASD came Tuesday that they have selected Jim Browder, originally from Florida, as their next superintendent. 

Atwater said in December that he had to take the chance to apply for the job, as it was the only other job in the state of Alaska he was attracted to.

Council supports exploration, talks turf

A unanimous vote Wednesday night by the Soldotna City Council gave support for oil and gas exploration in Cook Inlet. 

Council member Kyle Fisher introduced a resolution that supported the extension to the term of the Kitchen Lights Unit Agreement so that Furie Operating Alaska, LLC, formerly known as Escopeta, can continue oil and gas exploration and development in the unit.

Peninsula Winter Games offer family fun

Chances are kids that attend the 36th annual Peninsula Winter Games will not be bored. Whether it’s taking a ride on the ice slide, rolling a strike at ice bowling, watching the Native Youth Olympics, watching the fireworks Saturday night or competing in the Monopoly tournament, just to name a few — there will be plenty of events that will keep kids busy all day long. 

“We just have all kinds of things for kids to do,” Soldotna Chamber of Commerce executive director Michelle Glaves said.

Duo offers unique brand of classical concert

When Low and Lower performs Saturday night, it should be a different type of musical experience.

Low and Lower is Paul Sharpe, a bassist, and Brooks Whitehouse, a cellist. The two men offer renditions of classical staples while entertaining the crowd with narration and humor.

The concert, sponsored by the Performing Arts Society, will take place at the Soldotna Christ Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m.

Project Homeless Connect aims to provide info, hope

Two weeks ago, Marti Slater was worried she wouldn’t have enough volunteers. Now she’s afraid she might have too many — which is not a bad problem to have. 

Slater has been putting together Project Homeless Connect — a one day event that will provide information, services and hospitality in a central location. The event will be held Wednesday at the Merit Inn from 10 a.m to 3 p.m.

Culture clash

Art used to be just another fun thing for Joel Isaak to do when he had free time. Now, it is a part of who he is. He’s used it as a way to process his experiences.

“It’s a way that I’ve coped as a kid with things that were happening to me, positive or negative,” Isaak said. “There is a lot of positive things that I represent in my story, too.”

Isaak is 23, grew up in Soldotna, belongs to the Kenaitze Indian Tribe and is a senior at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. 

He discourages labels; there is no one thing that defines him.

Aerial control

The Alaska State Board of Game voted unanimously Monday to approve aerial wolf predator control on the Kenai Peninsula. 

The two proposals, 35 and 36, for Game Management Units 15A and 15C respectively, call for intensive management on the Peninsula with the goal of increasing moose populations. 

The proposals still have to be processed through the legal system, but they were put on the board’s priority list that also includes a proposal for intensive management in Unit 26B, which includes Deadhorse.
