ANCHORAGE — Eagle River native Cruz Boseman was sick of the cold, so he joined the Navy thinking there would be no chance of being stationed in Alaska.

But in a strange twist of fate, the Navy assigned Boseman to the USS Anchorage, then sent him and the new warship to its namesake city for its commissioning ceremony.

Now the 21-year-old Boseman finds himself playing tour guide on the amphibious transport ship and showing his shipmates around town.

“A lot of people are like, where’s the closest bar? I’m like, whoa, there’s a lot more than just the bar,” he said.

ANCHORAGE — Alaska women earn less than men, were imprisoned at a higher rate during the last decade and are committing suicide at a rate twice the national average, according to a new study released Tuesday.

“There were some shocking results, some disappointing results,” said state Sen. Lesil McGuire, R-Anchorage, who requested the study from the Legislative Research Services. The request was made after McGuire said she reviewed the 2010 Alaska Victimization Survey, for which 1,000 Alaska women were interviewed.

NOME — A 53-year-old former champion won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to become the oldest winner of Alaska's grueling test of endurance.

Mitch Seavey and 10 dogs crossed the Nome finish line to cheering crowds at 10:39 p.m. Alaska time Tuesday.

"This is for all of the gentlemen of a certain age," he said on a live stream posted to the Iditarod website after completing the race in temperatures just above zero. His race time in the 1,000-mile race was nine days, 7 hours and 39 minutes.

ANCHORAGE — A Kodiak man was formally charged Tuesday with murdering two employees at a Coast Guard communications station more than 10 months ago, and court document indicate his disciplinary actions at work may have been the motive.

James Michael Wells, 61, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of killing an officer or employee of the United States, and two counts of related weapons charges in the April 12 deaths of Petty Officer 1st Class James Hopkins and retired Chief Boatswain’s Mate Richard Belisle.
