Representatives with the Pebble Partnership hold two seminars this week on the project's 20,000-page Environmental Baseline Document.

Meetings will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Soldotna at the Kenai Peninsula College Commons, and noon to 3 p.m. Friday at the Cowles Council Chambers, Homer City Hall.

Mike Heatwole, vice president of public affairs for the Pebble Partnership, will open the presentation. Some consultants and scientists who worked on the baseline studies also will attend, particularly those who did studies on water, fish, meteorology, wildlife and birds.

Deputy marshals with the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force about 9 p.m. Sunday arrested two Ohio fugitives charged with meth manufacturing at a Pennock Street home in Homer. Robert Davis, 43, and Cheri Kuss, 37, were two of northern Ohio’s “dangerous dozen” most wanted list. Deputy marshals, with assistance from Homer Police, Homeland Security and the Alaska State Troopers, nabbed Davis and Kuss without incident, said David Long of Anchorage, deputy supervisor for the violent offender task force.

HOMER — It’s not too hard for Homer Saw and Cycle owners Claire Waxman and Bob Schmutzler to keep track of how long they’ve owned their Ocean Drive business. All they have to do is count the candles on the birthday cake of their son, Jake.

This year, that will be 25 years. With former partner Mikel Bensend, Waxman and Schmutzler bought the business in January 1987 from Les Crane and Gates Brown. Ten months later, Jake was born.

In only the fourth sea otter release in the Alaska SeaLife Center's history, officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Network released a mature male otter off the end of the Homer Spit on Monday morning.

Once let out of his pen, Corky, estimated to be between 7- and 9-months old, quickly walked down the icy beach and dove into the water near the Homer Pioneer Dock. He swam around icebergs floating off the beach and checked out several other otters in the area.
"It's going to be an amazing case," said Tim Lebling, director of the stranding network.
