A genetic analysis of chinook salmon caught in the Upper Cook Inlet east side setnet fishery showed more than 25 percent of the harvest typically attributed to the Kenai River actually returning to the Kasilof River.

The new information means estimates of the percentage of the late run Kenai River harvested by the setnet fishery — usually between 17-19 percent according a Fish and Game researcher — will drop.

First, the Megalodon model bit through a large block of Styrofoam. Then, it moved on to larger fare, a wave-runner, a kayak, a large steel frame; with each passing feat more students gathered around the Soldotna High School computer screen.

When he was sufficiently impressed, freshman Cole Bartelds made a few quick movements with his mouse, attached a document to the video and embedded both in his SMART Board Project file.

The video was one of several students downloaded, learned to convert into different formats and manipulate inside their projects.

Ryan Reid and Wade VonHeeder played an improvised guitar version of “We Three Kings” for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education during a presentation about Skyview High School.

Staff members from Skyview highlighted school robotics, career pathway exploration activities and popular guitar class as well as a new “Zeros Aren’t Permitted” program during their school presentation for the board.

The City of Soldotna is officially a “Purple Heart City” after council members voted to honor residents who had served in the military and earned the medal.

Preston “Nick” Nelson, the state commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart told council members the honor held impact.

“You don’t go looking for a Purple Heart,” he said. “Unfortunately you know, it hurts.”

He said as he’s travelled to various functions and met other medal recipients, he “got off easy.”

“It really means a lot to me, it means a lot to all of us,” he said.
