Hakkinen skies final leg as US finishes 17th in relay

HOCHFILZEN, Austria — Norway won the men’s and women’s World Cup biathlon relays Sunday.

The Norwegian men used nearly flawless shooting to beat defending champion France in the 4x7.5-kilometer race. The team of Lars Helge Birkeland, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, Vetle Sjastad Christiansen and Henrik L’Abee-Lund missed one target before finishing in 1 hour, 17 minutes, 55.2 seconds.

France also avoided penalty loops but lost time with six shooting mistakes and trailed Norway by 34.5 seconds. Russia had nine missed targets and came 46.6 behind in third.

Hakkinen competes in Hochfilzen

HOCHFILZEN, Austria — Jakov Fak of Slovenia won a World Cup 12.5-kilometer pursuit Saturday for his first career victory.

Fak missed two targets before edging out Dmitry Malyshko of Russia by 0.9 of a second. Defending overall champion Martin Fourcade of France missed three times and finished third.

In Friday’s sprint race, Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen finished 67th with a time of 28 minutes, 7.4 seconds. Hakkinen had three misses on the range and was 2:36.3 behind winner Andreas Birnbacher of Germany.

Hakkinen did not qualify for Saturday’s pursuit.

Alert level raised for Iliamna

Increased earthquake activity has prompted scientists to raise the alert level for an Alaska volcano.

Alaska Volcano Observatory officials on Friday elevated the alert status for Iliamna Volcano, located on the west side of Cook Inlet, from its previous “normal” alert level to “advisory.” Officials also changed the aviation color code from green to yellow.
