The host Soldotna softball team defeated Kenai Central 8-3 in six innings Monday in Northern Lights Conference play.

The Stars move to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the league. Kenai falls to 2-5 and 2-3.

Soldonta coach Kelli Knoebel said Serena Prior had a big game for the Stars.

On the mound, Prior went the distance, allowing three hits and one earned run. She struck out four.

“She kept the ball low in the zone,” Knoebel said.

On offense, Prior was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, with her first home run punctuating the big performance.

A 23-year-old Soldotna man accidentally discharged a handgun Saturday, injuring himself and a 22-year-old man, Alaska State Troopers reported. Both men were transported to different hospitals for treatment.

Cook Inlet Academy and Ninilchik both qualified athletes for the Class 1-2-3A state meet on Friday at the Region II Championships in Talkeetna.

Ninilchik’s Jack Wheeler and Cook Inlet Academy’s Madison Orth led the Peninsula by winning three events each.

Wheeler dominated the jumps. He won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 4 inches. He took the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 11 3-4 inches. Finally, Wheeler had a mark of 38—1 1-4 to win the triple jump by almost 10 feet.

The Kenai Central baseball team picked up three victories on Friday and Saturday in a road trip to the Matanuska-Susitna valleys.

The Kardinals improved to 4-1 on the year.

Friday, Kenai beat Houston 12-8.

“We gave up eight runs, but only one was earned,” Kenai coach John Kennedy said. “Our pitchers are doing an OK job, but our defense is really hurting us.”

The Kards were down 7-2 at one point in the game.
