Two Kenai River Brown Bears made the 2012-13 North American Hockey League All-Rookie Team, which was announced Wednesday.

Both forward Matt Seidel and defenseman Jake Bushey were named to the Second Team. Seidel and Bushey were the only two players from the West Division on the first or second team.

In order to be eligible for the team, players had to be playing in their first year of junior hockey, or they must have entered the season having played less than 10 NAHL regular season games.

A pilot and his passenger — stranded by a plane crash en route from Soldotna — were rescued in Patton Bay on Montague Island by airmen with the Alaska Air National Guard’s 210th, 211th and 212th rescue squadrons, according to a press release.

The Air National Guard reported that the survivors were planning on beachcombing Sunday when the aircraft flipped on its back after landing. An Air National Guard spokesperson was unsure of the plane’s condition, whether it could fly again, and at what point in the landing process it flipped or what caused it to flip.

The Soldotna softball team split with Kodiak on Friday and Saturday in Kodiak in Northern Lights Conference action.

On Friday, the Stars notched an 11-2 victory.

Soldotna was leading 5-2 until the top of the seventh inning, when the Stars put seven runs on the board.

Madeline Wilcox had a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning, while Ila Cobb added a two-run single.

Serena Prior picked up the win on the mound, pitching the whole game and striking out six while walking five.

The Kodiak baseball team cruised past Soldotna on Friday and Saturday in Kodiak in Northern Lights Conference action.

The Bears notched a 12-1 victory on Friday and a 12-1 victory on Saturday to improve to 2-0 overall and in league. The Stars are 0-2 and 0-2.

Friday, Brandon Mahle picked up the win by striking out five in 15 innings. Soldotna’s lone run was unearned.

Saturday, Kodiak’s Jakob Arnold struck out 10 in five innings.

Soldotna’s Shayne Miller had the Stars’ offensive highlight for the weekend, banging a home run in the fourth inning.
