The Soldotna softball team defeated Skyview 11-5 in 6 innings Monday in Northern Lights Conference play.

The Stars are now 4-1 in the league and 4-1 overall, while the Panthers are 1-4 and 1-2.

SoHi coach Kelli Knoebel said the win was keyed by Serena Prior and Kaycee Munn.

Prior threw a two-hitter and did not give up an earned run. Munn finished 2 for 2 with a home run, a double and five RBIs.

Knoebel also said Ila Cobb made some great scoops at first base.

Skyview High School teacher Rob Sparks received the 2013 BP Teacher of the Year award in a ceremony Wednesday at the Soldotna Senior Center.

The award includes a $1,500 scholarship for continuing education and a bronze sculpture by Alaska artist Mary Regat, according to information provided by BP.

Kenai Central sophomore Allie Ostrander sure had an eventful day on Saturday.

Ostrander won all three events she competed in at the Kenai Peninsula Borough track meet in Homer earlier in the day, then rushed back up to Kenai to compete in the girls soccer game against Soldotna. Ostrander also won a borough race Friday.

Although her team ended up losing to Soldotna 2-0, Ostrander won the girls 800 meters (2 minutes, 25.92 seconds), the 1,600 meters (5:12.94), the 3,200 meters (10:44.19) and the 300-meter hurdles (50.5) earlier in the day.

Forward Alex Jackstadt of the Kenai River Brown Bears was named to the West Division All-Division team Friday.

Jackstadt, who was the MVP of the Bears, managed to get a nod in a division that had two of the six teams in the North American Hockey League that collected at least 80 points.

Division champ the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild had three players on the team — forward Jono Davis, defenseman Josh Hartley and goalie Robert Nichols.

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs had two — forward Garret Clemment and defenseman Doug Rose.
