The Skyview wrestling team edged host Nikiski 39-38 in a dual Tuesday night. There were six forfeits in the match, Skyview coach Neldon Gardner said.

For the Panthers, Hannah Hutchison earned a pin in the 106-pound weight class, while TJ Checketts earned a victory by decision at 126. Bailey Blumentritt, meanwhile, won by pin at 138.

Skyview won by forfeit at 132, 195, 220 and in the heavyweight division.

For the Bulldogs, Dakoda Neely earned a pin at 113, while teammate Trey Zimmerman also earned a pin in his weight class.

The Kenai Police Department responded to several motor vehicle accidents Monday caused by slippery roads during the first significant snowfall.

"I think it's definitely the roads," KPD Sgt. Ben Langham said. "But it's also a driver-adjustment -- it's something that happens every year during the first or second icy road (conditions) or snows."

Langham offered some tips for driving on the slick roads.

"Drivers have to remember that they need to allow adequate space in front of them," he said. "As well as go slowly and safely for the road conditions.

The Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the host Fresno (Calif.) Monsters 5-4 on Sunday in overtime to move into a tie for first place in the North American Hockey League West Division.

The Brown Bears have never been in first place this late in the season in franchise history.

Kenai River is 11-4-1, good for 23 points and a tie with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The Monsters earned a point to move into sole possession of third place at 8-5-4.

South defeated North 53-20 in the small-schools all-state football game Saturday.

Former Kenai Central head coach Jim Beeson coached the South team, which was made up of players from Kenai Central, Homer and Skyview. Nikiski didn’t participate, and Soldotna played in the large-schools game.

Homer’s Dyllan Day was named the game’s most valuable player. Kenai Central’s Kyle Dougherty was the defensive player of the game, while Homer’s Robin Glosser was the offensive player of the game.

Alex Nason of Kenai Central scored a touchdown for South.
