A Kenai resident is believed to be dead after being involved in a mid-air collision while flying an airplane over Southwest Alaska on Friday.

Scott Veal, 24, was reportedly piloting a Cessna 208 Caravan that collided in mid-air with a Cessna 207. The 207’s pilot, Kirsten Sprague, 26, of Idaho, walked away without apparent injury.

The Wasilla girls and boys won the Frank Dieckgraeff Cross Country Running Invite on Friday in Seward.

The Wasilla girls scored 21 points to beat Seward's 85 and Homer's 96. The Wasilla boys notched 44 points to top Seward's 48 and Skyview's 65.

The girls five-kilometer race was won by Mariah Burroughs of Wasilla at 19 minutes, 18 seconds, while runner-up Peggy Mathis of Wasilla crossed at 19:20. The Warriors took seven of the top 10 slots.

The Soldotna volleyball team notched a nonconference victory over Seward on Friday in Soldotna.

The Stars improved to 4-0 overall with a 25-23, 25-18 and 25-17 victory over the Seahawks.

In an email, Soldotna coach Bruce King called the triumph a solid win over a good-digging team.

"Kylee Woodford and Kaycee Munn passed well, allowing our setters to work the middles," King wrote. "As a result, Kaillee Skjold and Sydney Goggia logged 10 and 7 kills respectively and hit a combined .438."
