The Kenai Central girls basketball team held off Thunder Mountain 37-34 for a victory Thursday in the opening round of the Atigun Inc./Powerade Kenai River Challenge at Kenai Central.
The Falcons got off an attempt at a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot rolled off and Kenai held on for the victory.
Thunder Mountain led 23-20 at halftime, but Kenai took a 28-27 lead into the final quarter.
Justice English paced the Kardinals with 11 points.
Ashley Young had 18 points for the Falcons.
