Walmart to participate in hunger relief campaign
Walmart stores are giving customers the opportunity to fight hunger in their communities in April. Through partnership with Con Agra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg's, customers can purchase select products that will generate meals to feed hungry families and support hunger fighting nonprofits throughout the nation.
On May 5 from 1-5p.m., the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank van will be in Walmart Store parking lot to gather your donations. City of Kenai Mayor Pat Porter along with Food Bank staff and volunteers will gather your items which will feed hungry neighbors.
Walmart is also asking Facebook users to help fight hunger by voting among two hundred communities with the highest rates of unemployment nationwide. With their votes, Americans will decide which communities will share in a $2 million donation from Walmart.
Spring typically brings a decrease in food donations, leaving hunger organizations with limited resources and their clientele vulnerable. On the Kenai Peninsula, 1 in 10 live in poverty according to the 2010 census.
