Doug and Cathy Howlett celebrated 50 years of marriage on Aug. 17, 2012. Doug and Cathy first met in 1961 while working together at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union. Doug was working as a loan officer and Cathy as a teller.
Doug went on to work for 36 years at Alaska USA, retiring in 1997 as a senior vice-president. He enjoys reading and bowling when he doesn’t have a fishing pole in his hands.
Cathy worked for the government for 12 years and then started a new career as a legal secretary. She stays constantly busy with quilting activities, reading, and going on “road trips” with her friends.
They have three children — Kyler, Craig, and Ryan — who have given them years of mostly fond memories and four grandchildren. Kyler and his wife Kami live in Anchorage. Craig with his partner Dasha, and Ryan with his partner Jennifer live in Soldotna. As the boys were growing up, they stayed very involved in their sporting and school activities.
Upon retirement, the couple moved to Soldotna to live five minutes away from their paradise on the Kenai River that they have owned for thirty-one years. They enjoy sharing their special place on the river each summer with friends and family.
Doug and Cathy will be sharing this special occasion with their children and grandchildren in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in November — after the silvers stop running.
