Joshua Tyson Bird and Kimberly Brower-Guffy of Kenai announce the birth of their son, Devin Clark Bird, at 7:40 p.m.on Dec. 28, 2012. He weighed 9 pounds, 6 ounces. He joins sisters AnaBelle and Elora.


Hartlon Hugh Swift Kimberly Claire McLaury of Aberdeen, Wash., announce the birth of their son, Hartlon Hugh Swift Jr., at 1:17 p.m. on Nov. 27, 2012. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches. He joins sister Alexis Myah Swift. His grandparents are Hartlon J. Swift and Bridget James of Aberdeen, and Norman and Susan McLaury of Nikiski.

Caitlin Reid of Nikiski was named to the Dean’s List at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn., for the fall 2012 semester. Full-time undergraduate students must have a 3.50 or better cumulative GPA for the semester to be eligible for the Dean’s List.

Zachary Truesdell, from Soldotna, was recently named to the President’s Academic Honors list for the fall semester at Dakota State University in Madison, S.D. Students earned a 3.5 to 3.99 average to qualify for the honors list.

The Nikiski Community Council announces the winners of its Light Up the Winter Nights Nikiski Holiday Lights Contest.

In the Business category, 1st place goes to Charlie’s Pizza; 2nd place is awarded to Stop n Go; and The Studio Espresso Shop took 3rd.

In the Residential animated category, the home of Brenda and John Klimpke were awarded 1st place and the home of Terry Schilling received 2nd place.

In the Residential traditional, 1st place goes to Bill and Donita Parrish; 2nd place to Paul and Karla Smith, and 3rd place to Dale McGahan.

Honorable mentions are awarded to Winston and Pam Gillies, Ray and Lily McCauley, Travis McGahan, Amy and Jeff Stock, and Karen Morris.

All first place winners get $100 credit on their Homer Electric Association account and a $25 gift card to a local Nikiski business. Second place winners receive a variety of local business gift cards worth $75 and third place winners receive $50 gift cards. Honorable mentions receive a gift card for $20 to spend at a local business.

The Nikiski Community Council thanks everyone who participated and the judging panel, who drove around searching for the lights on the coldest night of the season (minus 27 degrees!).
