National Public Health Week tips

In recognition of National Public Health Week, the Kenai Public Health Center is providing health tips throughout the week. Take one small step each day for a healthier life.

Protect Yourself While You’re on the Move: Safety on the go is often in our own hands, but it’s also tied to community design. Together, we can turn our streets into roads to better health.

■ Do a quick survey of your neighborhood. Is it walkable? Is it safe?

■ Let your community leaders know your concerns

■ Advocate for development that promotes community and walk ability

■ Dress for the weather conditions

■ Yellow lights mean SLOW down, not speed up

Empower a Healthy Community: Support public health efforts that create healthy opportunities for all. Good health is a community affair. There are many area resources looking for your participation and energy. People Promoting Wellness and Community Action Coalition have groups working on several things:

■ Homeless Action Committee- addressing homelessness of all ages in the Central Peninsula.

■ Local Foods Group- creating opportunities for area residents to grow, purchase local foods.

■ Central Peninsula Change Club-working on opportunities to increase physical activity and change environments to support exercise.

■ Community Action Coalition- working to decrease youth use of drugs, alcohol tobacco by increasing opportunities for kids to choose healthy options and activities.

■ Call 335-3412 if you are interested in getting involved.
