■ The Kenai and Soldotna chambers of commerce will host a joint luncheon at noon on Wednesday with a legislative wrap-up with from House Speaker Mike Chenault, Reps. Homer Electric Association will be providing public tours of its new Nikiski Combined Cycle Conversion Project from 1-4:30 p.m. May 1. The tours will be about 30 minutes long and provide the public with an opportunity to get a look at the new power generation facility. The plant is the cornerstone of HEA’s Independent Light program and will provide up to 80 megawatts of power when it comes on line later this year.

Tour participants will park in the lot in front of the former Agrium facility at approximately Mile 21 on the Kenai Spur Highway. A shuttle bus will then take them over to the nearby generation plant. The project is an active construction site and is not handicapped accessible at this time. All tour participants must be at least 18 years old and have proper boots and outdoor gear in order to go on the tour. For more information call Homer Electric Association at 1-800-478-8551.

The Soldotna Professional Pharmacy will open its doors for people to dispose of expired or unused prescription or over-the-counter medications 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Disposing of unneeded medications restricts their misuse, can make homes safer and is healthier for the waterways and aquatic life. The pharmacy is located at 299 North Binkley Street in Soldotna.

The North Peninsula Recreation Service Area is accepting applications from local food and craft vendors, school organizations, athletic organizations, local artists, churches, information and educational groups and any other interested parties to reserve booth space at the Family Fun in the Midnight Sun Event on June 15 at the NPRSA facilities in Nikiski. Interested vendors are encouraged to contact North Pen Rec early. The deadline to apply is May 31. Registration is open for Lemonade Day for youth interested in starting, owning and operating a lemonade stand. Lemonade Day follows a 14-step process to walk youth from their dream to a businesses plan while teaching them the principles required to start a big company. The City of Soldotna is now accepting new applications for the 2013 Storefront Improvement Program. Business owners or lessees can apply for a 50-50 matching grant, up to $5,000, to improve the exterior of their business. This year the city is expanding the program so that it is open to all businesses in the Commercial or Limited Commercial zoning districts.
