The 46th Annual Outstanding Student Awards event was held April 26 at Kenai Central High School in the Renee Henderson Auditorium, presented by the Kenai Peninsula Masonic Lodges: Seward No. 6, Kenai No. 11 and Sterling No. 22.

Thirty schools were represented from the Kenai Peninsula School District and one from Nome, making a total of 36 student awards issued.

The most important goal of this event is to give each student public acknowledgement and recognition and reinforcement that dedication to learning, being an active and positive participant in the school, school activities and helping other students is noticed, encouraged, and rewarded, with the hope that this positive reinforcement leads the students to become a benefit and productive members to their communities.

The program started with an welcome and introductions by W.M. John Strother, who is Master of the Kenai Lodge No. 11, followed by invocation preformed by Marcus Ashkenasy, Junior Warden for Kenai Lodge No. 11.

The awards and scholarships were presented to the students by Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, Sen. Peter Micciche, and district Superintendent Dr. Steve Atwater.

Stage assistants were V.W. Bill Roberts, District Deputy No. 2, R.W. Carl Lindstrom, Junior Grand Warden, For the Grand Lodges of Free and Accepted Masons of Alaska, and representatives of all three lodges, Sterling Lodge No. 22, and Mr. Dave Jones who is the Assistant Superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. The Master of Ceremonies was Ralph Sterling of Soldotna who is the Chairman of the Masonic Outstanding Student awards program, and also a Past Master of Kenai Lodge No. 11. Al-ASKA Past Potentate Nik Nikolas of the Alaska Shriners was in attendance and acted as escort for the Lt. Governor and his staff.

For this award each student also received a Unites States Mint 1-ounce fine silver Silver Eagle, a book published by the Scottish Rite called “Dynamic Freedoms,” a gold embossed certificate from our Lodges, a personalized Certificate of appreciation from Governor Sean Parnell, an individual Award plaque for the student’s home and an engraved name tag for the large award plaque at each school.

School participation is voluntary and each school chooses their student. The lodge provides the awards and with the help of the KPBSD and many other people we are able to provide this award event.

The scholarship awards are submitted to our committee by the students from each school, they are then selected based on the criteria of the scholarship form and a review of our committee.
